World Cup Corner by Roman Torn

By popular demand, our column World Cup Corner is back! For those of you that do not know him, Roman Torn is a former Alpine Canada Ski Team member, Olympian and WMSC member. And he has agreed to highlight the word cup races each week throughout the World Cup Season. Hope you and your athletes enjoy it!

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Alright, alright, alright…..Ski racing is back!

For the first time in many years, both men’s and women’s opening World Cup GS races went off this weekend in great form in Solden Austria. No snow, wind….Just great hard snow conditions for all racers to gauge where they are at after a long summer of training.

The women started things off on the Saturday with the top two finishers showing their early form is a step ahead of many. Both Gut-Behrami and Shiffrin put on a great display of very solid skiing with Shiffrin just edging out Gut-Behrami for the win. Also great skiing and result for Canada’s Valerie Grenier finishing 7th. Her aggressive skiing on the steep icy pitch both runs set her apart from many and earned her this excellent result.

2nd Run Women’s

If you want to take a deep dive into what makes the difference between a fast and the fastest run, check out this analysis between Gut-Behrami and Shiffrin.

For the men it was an amazingly tight race with .97 separating the top 10 and just over 2 seconds separating the entire 2nd run field of skiers. Marco Odermatt ends up showing last year’s contention for the World Cup Overall was not a coincidence, taking the win by a small margin over the Austrian, Roland Leitinger. Two Canadians qualified for the second run, with Eric Read finishing 18th and Trevor Philip coming in 22nd. Check out their skiing.

Couple weeks off now and then we get some exciting Parallel action along with the first Men’s Slalom.

Hope you enjoyed watching and Happy Halloween!

Month of Listening

Dear Families,

We have come to the close of our Month of Listening. Over the last 30 days, well a little over, we’ve heard from a handful of you over a range of issues. Please find below a summary of what was sent in:

On hill safety – Ensuring the staff are knowledgeable of the mountain and capable of managing athletes through the varied terrain and conditions.

On hill behaviour – Our teams are very visible and with this our actions are under a microscope. A few instances were shared with us to highlight this fact, requesting we take care and be vigilant to lead by example. Living and embodying the Teamship values were highlighted several times.

Program Accessibility – This comment was in reference to our U12 programming and how we can work on affordability and accessibility for more local families.

Covid mitigation – There were a number of comments expressing a range of perspectives regarding our Covid-19 situation, vaccines and how they relate to our operations. Thank you to everyone for this valuable feedback as they helped us build our latest vaccine policy.

Good summer programming – We received a few notes from families happy with the dryland camps and programming run over the summer. Also, in there some constructive feedback to improve upon what was done. Thanks for those who shared specifics details, this really helps.

Being emotionally supportive in our coaching – This has been a growing feedback theme over the last few years. We heard from a good number of people about the importance of listening to the athletes and being aware of them as they go through the development process. These notes were talking about things like anxiety, nerves around racing, being attentive to little injuries, and helping groups of kids work together.

Coaching the whole team, while understanding the individuals goals – These feedback notes cautioned around favouritism and giving coaching attention based on speed, talent, or results. Rather then this, we’re encouraged to get to know everyone on the team and work for the unique goals each kid shares.

All of this feedback offers greats insight into you the membership and what is valued from our programming. We will continued to engage throughout to season and if anyone wishes to leave anonymous feedback moving forward, I have added a hyperlink in my email signature to click on if you have any.

Thank you everyone for participated in this Month of Listening exercise and we look forward to being back on snow.

Sincerely,

Mike

WMSC Vaccine Policy | with immediate effect

“The Board of Directors of WMSC has developed and approved the Club’s new Covid Vaccination policy outlined in the attachment. This policy was recommended by a vaccination subcommittee created by the Board to review all the relevant regulations and guidelines. The subcommittee spoke with the Club’s medical advisors and spent considerable time discussing and reviewing to determine what policy would be most suitable for our Club. The Board recognizes there may be many diverse opinions regarding an appropriate vaccination policy. We ask that all parents, athletes, members and staff come together to support the implementation of this policy this season. Please take a moment to review this policy to familiarize yourself and your family with our new guidelines.”
