Racers were back in action at Whistler last weekend for the first U14 zone races since 2020!

It was a beautiful spring like weekend under mostly sunny skies, with over 120 racers competing at the National Training Centre on Whistler’s Ptarmigan run. The two-run combined giant slalom races were held on Saturday, and the two-run combined slalom races were held on Sunday. It was a perfect way to get racing again! Despite the warm temperatures the race surface held up really well, with lots of terrific work from a great crew of volunteers from across the Coast Zone clubs. Big thank you to Teck for sponsoring this event and to Vail for helping us make it happen.

A very special thanks to our Club coaches for helping all WMSC racers achieve outstanding results!

Congratulations to all racers!

Nat Bosa Award | Applications deadline is January 31st

Nancy Greene – Nat Bosa Bursary: Nancy Greene played an instrumental role in starting the Blackcomb Ski and Snowboard Club (which merged into WMSC) and in supporting the Canadian junior skier development program. Nancy has continued to be a great supporter of ski racing in Canada over the years. Nat Bosa and his companies have provided the Whistler Mountain Ski Club and the Blackcomb Ski and Snowboard Club with financial assistance for the construction of both ski cabins and have continued to support WMSC and our athletes over the years.

To recognize the tremendous contributions of Nancy and Nat in support of ski racing in Whistler the Whistler Mountain Ski Club created the Nancy Greene/Nat Bosa Bursary. These funds are intended to contribute towards coaching fees, travel expenses, equipment costs and other expenses related to the development of our ski racers. To qualify an athlete must be active in a Club program (FIS, U16, U14, U12), BC Team or National Team. The Board of Directors has appointed a committee to administer the Bursary and athletes should submit their requests, in confidence, to the committee by the end of January. Awards are announced in February and funds applied to the recipient’s racer account. Award criteria include perceived financial need, program costs, the athlete’s character and skill level, and parental volunteerism.

Apply to bursaries@wmsc.info. The deadline is January 31, 2022

Alpine Canada has a new online database for Officials.

If you have taken an Alpine Officials class in the past, you can sign up for an account on Alpinepoints.ca and request legacy certification. This will add you to the new National Officials Database. This will make it easier when volunteering at races or trying to remember what certification you have.

Instructions

Go to Alpinepoints.ca
Click on the Officials Tab
Select Login/Manage Your Profile
Select Need an Account and then go through the steps to create your account
Once signed up login and go to your profile and push the Your certifications menu and choose Request Legacy/ Equivalency Certification
Under “Which Admin you would like to request” choose Bob Walton
Under “What Year” enter the year that you took the course
In the “What Certification Type” drop down, choose the course (e.g. Alpine Level 2)
In the “Description Documentation Box” put in the date of the course and the instructor
New course registrations will now take place through this system so all new students will be in the system going forward.

Volunteers Needed | U16 (Jan 15-16) and U14 (Jan 22-23) Coast Zone Teck Races

Thank you to those of you that have already volunteered for the upcoming U14 and U16 races. If you have not heard back from us regarding your roles – you will shortly!

But we still have many positions to fill to make both these races a success. Please email volunteers@wmsc.info to secure your position. And remember, you don’t need an athlete in these races to volunteer. As we look to host our first races in a long time, we need the support of the entire club to make these races a success. If you do have an athlete in the race, we do need you to volunteer for both days of the race if you can.

We need all of you to make these races happen.

Please expect a WMSC Volunteer survey coming up this weekend!

Public health orders and competition update

Dear Families,

With the new health restrictions in place to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19, it is our present understanding that ski racing will be allowed to continue with competition. We are expecting this to be confirmed by BC Alpine shortly. At the moment we have two home races on the calendar, January 13-16 for the U16s and January 22/23 for the U14s. These events are moving forward with BC Alpine’s covid protocols in place which are proof of vaccination for all Athletes, coaches, & Volunteers, please stay tuned for the race notices. The FIS circuit and U12 events will continue as well. Regarding our regularly scheduled indoor dryland sessions, these will be suspended for most teams for the duration of this order. The older teams may continue to use the gym with last year’s protocols in place, 6 athletes per room + two coaches, masks mandatory for all.

Please remember that masks and proof of vaccines are required to enter the club cabin, Garbo hut and ensure the athletes have proper masks for the gondolas, something better than a buff please.

We would like to thank BC Alpine for putting in the work to keep competition alive this season and thank you all for your cooperation and appreciate the support to keep us safe and skiing.
