U16 Team Update | Oct 14th

Hello U16,

Recap

Thanks to all those who helped at the Ski Swap last week - I’m sorry to have missed it but our U16 KickStart Camp was underway.  11 of the U16 group kicked off the season with a full weekend at the Whistler Athlete Centre. The camp balanced physical training with the education and skills work that sets athletes up for the winter, and the athletes stayed busy and engaged throughout.

We included:

  • Daily activation routines to start each morning

  • Rollerblading with the ski boot system on Friday to build ski-specific balance and movement

  • Field workouts and games, including short anaerobic intervals and decelerations, plus partner games

  • Strength sessions in the club gym on Friday, Saturday and Sunday

  • Individual testing of athlete’s 1 rep max score, so we have a baseline for the workouts

  • Exclusive use of the Candian Sport Institute gym in Cheakamus

  • A Start Gate Check-In that athletes completed on their phones, reflecting on their start routines, what they want from coaches in the start, and how they approach the mental side of racing

 WMSC AGM & Fitness Testing

We’ll see you Oct 24th for our Annual General Meeting and Fitness Testing.  This year, as with the AGM, fitness testing for everyone will be at the Whistler Secondary School.

Sun Peaks Camp

Nov 11 we will travel via a 24 passenger bus along with a WMSC van and trailer.  On Nov 20 we return on a large bus with the FIS team after training in the morning.  The team will stay at the Cahilty Lodge again, but with a different meal plan at a local café, who’s creating and delivering all our meals to the lodge.

4 coaches will be at the camp for approximately 26 racers.

Please register here for Sun Peaks.  Registration closes at EOD Oct 15.

Parent Meeting

Thank you to all the families who were able to tune into the U16 parent meeting last week. If you missed it, here is the recording - download link available for only 3 days

Tuning

In U16, racers are expected to be tuning their own skis frequently and without help. To make sure, our racers will be monitored by coaches 3-4 at a time starting in the Sun Peaks camp and “signed-off” for demonstrating and understanding the required skills. Instructions will be provided from coaches when needed. For those not at Sun Peaks, we’ll continue to have coaches lead tuning at the club after skiing. Racers will be notified of their scheduled afternoon.

Thanks,

Drew H
