This Week at the Club

Message from the Executive Director

Dear WMSC community,

As we start to see snow on the peaks, I want to share three things on my mind: dryland, joy, and the people who keep this club running.

1. Dryland:
What we build in the gym this fall carries over to every run we take this winter. Modern equipment and snow surfaces ask more of athletes' bodies than the sport ever has. Fitter athletes get more quality runs each day, recover faster, and are less likely to get hurt.

Everyone U16 and FIS aged, should’ve received a copy of the dryland program and schedule from Ryan Oughtred, our Dryland Coordinator.   Tomorrow, Saturday, rain or shine, there will be an MTB ride and the sport Saturday activities for those U10-U14 athletes.

Ryan, our dryland coordinator, the coaching staff and I share one goal: raise the floor. We want every athlete to reach a new personal best before stepping onto snow. Personal best means better than you were, not better than someone else.

We also want to raise the ceiling. Few investments in this sport pay back like physical preparation, and we want to support the athletes ready to do more. Drew, our U16 Lead Coach, has been busy planning a dryland training camp here in Whistler over Thanksgiving weekend for our U16 and FIS athletes. The camp will build team culture and introduce athletes to the habits that raise the ceiling: recovery, mental training strategies, technical review, and ski preparation. We'll also have a lot of fun along the way. Look for a separate email from Drew with additional details and registration.

2. Idrettsglede: the joy of sport
In my experience, success in any pursuit comes down to three things: persistence, consistency, and joy. Joy is the one people tend to overlook.

Norway has a word for it: idrettsglede, the joy of sport. The Norwegian Olympic and Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports put it at the centre of their vision: idrettsglede for alle, joy of sport for all. Their idea is that sport should be a place where young people experience mastery, make lifelong friends, and find somewhere they belong. Norway also produces more winter sport success per capita than any other nation. I don't think that's a coincidence.

Joy doesn't mean the work is easy. Persistence and consistency are much easier to sustain when athletes want to come back tomorrow, and that's what keeps kids in the sport long enough to find out how good they can be. We'll protect it on purpose, in how we coach, how we train, and how we talk to each other.

3. Volunteers: we can't do it without you
Last Sunday, our U16 and FIS athletes walked the full length of the Dave Murray National Training Centre and picked up more than 60 kg of trash, including broken B-net poles. Thank you.

Our venue is world class, and keeping it safe and effective takes a lot of people. Whistler has a proud history of hosting major events, and that has always depended on volunteers, from the Weasel Workers to the parents who show up race after race.

To everyone who has been a reliable source of help: thank you. Races and training simply don't run without you.

If you haven't gotten involved yet, or the sport feels intimidating from the outside, you don't need to know anything about ski racing to make a difference. A great place to start is the WMSC Ski Swap on Saturday October 10th, at the clubhouse, where we need hands for intake, sales, setup/takedown. It's one of the club's biggest community events of the year. It's also the easiest way to meet other families, and to gear up for the season. We have filled up most volunteer spots for the Swap, please follow the link HERE or register via the invitation link sent to your email for any additional shifts.

Thanks,

Jeff Lackie

26/27 WMSC Uniforms

Our Club uniform piece has been ordered for the 26/27 season. Parents do not need to submit an order or request for sizes. We typically receive the order in late November and will advise when uniforms will be available for pick up. We did not place an additional order for Helly Hansen gear this year. We are working on a Club discount code to use in the Winter however it is NOT currently in place.

This year we have a softshell midlayer for all U10-FIS, and Full program Masters athletes, included as part of your program registration. Any additional jackets remaining after these athletes have collected theirs, will be available for purchase for the Fast Fridays and Masters 10 day Athletes.

We have some team jackets from previous years that will be for sale at the Ski Swap and then available at uniform pick up. We have very few additional WMSC branded logo wear that will also be for sale.

Our club is fueled by amazing support from our Volunteers each year and we are continuing to develop ways that families can contribute, with ease of finding available shifts and tracking hours. Our goal is to ensure a smooth experience for families to ensure that commitments can of hours and allow our Volunteer Co-ordinator

This year, we are utilizing a new platform called Vome.

We are rolling out the new platform, starting with the annual Ski Swap. Each parent/guardian will receive an invite to create an account and nominate the athlete they are recording hours for. Hours completed will be logged throughout the season, check in and out at shift and see how many hours you have done. You can use the App, PC or laptop to select shifts, check in and check out.
