FIS team in Chile - U16 team joining this weekend
A Welcome Note from the Executive Director
Dear WMSC,
Our oldest athletes flew to Chile this week for a three-week training camp. It's still summer in Whistler, but the season is closer than it feels — and the work is well underway.
I officially started at the end of July. My family arrives ahead of the school year and our eldest will be training with the club this season, so I'm in this from both sides.
Since starting I've been on the venue, in the office, and in conversation with as many of you as I can find. What I've found is a club with real ambition and the people to back it up. A lot of that is Sandy's doing — he gave this club years of his life and left it in strong shape. My job is to build on that.
Here's what has me excited.
Alpine skiing is an individual sport that nobody does alone. Every athlete who has ever stood in a start gate got there because of a coach, a training partner, a parent, and a volunteer. Developing champions in life and sport is a big vision, and it takes a village to pull off. To our volunteers — thank you. The quality of racing and training we've come to expect here exists because you show up.
The DMNTC is one of the best venues in the world. New snowmaking equipment arrives for installation this fall, which means more control, more certainty, and more days on a quality surface. The hill offers a bit of everything; big, varied, multiple fall lines, terrain that can develop a first-year U12 and a World Cup athlete on the same morning. I've been fortunate to visit most of the best training sites in the world, and very few offer what we have here. My commitment is that we use every inch of it.
Every athlete here is worth investing in. The highest level is the standard we train to. It is not the filter we use to decide who is worth coaching. Talent is a starting point, not a verdict — some of the most impressive people I've worked with never stood on a podium, and I'm just as proud of them. I love the challenge of helping any athlete become the best version of themselves. If you're committed to finding the fun in getting better every day, we're going to work exceptionally well together.
Three things I'll be building toward, starting now:
Autonomy — athletes who own their preparation. Coaches set the guardrails; the athlete takes the leap. Less handholding, more ownership, and a lot more pride in the result.
Competence — a visible, honest path to getting better, for athletes and coaches alike. Commit to the process and the outcomes take care of themselves.
Belonging — a team you're glad to show up for. That's what makes the hard days good ones.
That work starts in the gym. Modern skis and snow surfaces demand a level of fitness this sport has never asked for before, and fitter athletes ski more quality runs, recover faster and stay healthier. Expect real energy behind our dryland this fall.
This is a snapshot of what I'm building — alongside every one of you. Please come find me at the Clubhouse, I want to meet you.
It's going to be a great year.
Best,
Jeff Lackie
