Fitness Testing, June 17th | Run to the Rings, June 18th

On Saturday, June 17th, we will have club wide fitness testing at the Whistler Racket Club, 8am to 11am. Please register via the link below to get in on the action.

Why come and to put yourself through the paces? The physical preparation in dryland during the off season is an essential component to our success on snow. To be fast in the course, we need the mobility, agility, aerobic and anaerobic capacities and strength for our bodies to perform in the ways in which we’re asking them to. As well when we hit such speeds, these attributes also keep us safe from injury.

The role of fitness testing is to give us the external benchmarks to know where we’re at and need to go to be at our desired levels. And it’s fun to come hang with your friends and coaches for the day.

On Sunday the 18th, there will be a “Run the Rings” happening at 10am, starting from the Ski Club Cabin in Creekside. This is a club wide challenge to see how fast we can run/hike from the club cabin, up to the Olympic rings on the timing flats, touch them and back down to the cabin. For the U12 and U14 athletes, please have a parent join you as we only have U16 and FIS athletes on staff during this time. In fact, all parents may join in the fun and make it a family affair. The record is jointly held by WMSC alumni Riley Seger and Ella Renzoni at 23 minutes, set in 2014… who can beat this?!?

We look forward to seeing you all soon.

Special Invitation from Canadian Ski Cross Crystal Globe Champion, Reece Howden | Sat, June 10

I am a member of the Canadian Ski Cross Team and the 2023 Overall Crystal Globe Champion. I would like to extend an invitation to your ski team members to an event June 10th, hosted by one of my sponsorship partners Chilliwack Ford. The event will be an afternoon at Chilliwack Ford with music, food trucks and activities for kids. I will also be there signing autographs, answering questions and speaking with aspiring young athletes, parents and local supporters of sport. The intent of this event is to create a lot of excitement for sport (particularly skiing), display the success of local athletes, show Chilliwack Ford’s support to local athletics and to hopefully make a big enough splash that it excites other businesses and companies to invest in sport.

Thank you very much for your time and hopefully this interests you.

I wanted to let you all know that as of the end of the month I will be retiring from WMSC and Whistler Cup. To say that the last ten years have been an incredible and satisfying journey would be an understatement. This coming from a family that left the inner city of Toronto (go Leafs go) to come to Whistler. The relationships and lifelong friends both Anne and our kids (Maddie/Harry) have met while being in Whistler are very meaningful and we look forward to the next chapter of life in the mountains with all of you.

The legacy that I believe we all have created at WMSC is one that I am very proud of. Some of my fondest memories are centered around all that we have accomplished as a club: a culture of ensuring everyone that walks through our doors feels welcomed and part of this great community we call WMSC, the ski racers that have come and gone and live our vision of “developing champions in life and sport”, the new logo/brand which we developed several years ago that now has significant recognition/relevance both domestically and around the global community of ski racing, the dollars raised from our sponsors over the past decade which has been very humbling as I reflect on the over $5m raised in cash or in kind. The majority of these partners are people or organizations that have a deep commitment to our sport and we will be forever grateful for their contributions. To our partners and suppliers with whom we could not operate, a personal special mention and thanks! To the coaches that are part of the team and those that may have come and gone over the past decade, you are all incredible people; the hours spent and dedication to the athletes is truly remarkable and inspirational. To the volley community the likes of which I have never experienced before, you all are our heroes!

Whistler Cup has returned to its glory this year after its start some 30 years ago. Knowing that the club and the community can produce a world class ski race for 400 plus athletes from around the world is beyond satisfying. I will look forward to attending the 50th anniversary!

To the Board of Directors both past and present, I respect each and every one of you for your unwavering commitment to WMSC. Your time and dedication to the club often goes unrecognized, however I truly understand the efforts put forth all year to enable WMSC to be seen as a leader in the industry. Passion drives behaviour and your collective passion is contagious.

To all the coaches I have had the privilege to work with and for, thank you. You all have made WMSC a better place for each and every athlete that has passed through our doors.

I want to thank all the kids that I have had the privilege and delight to coach over the past ten years. You have made me laugh, cry, scream and almost every other emotion that transcends our sport. Most importantly you have made me proud to be a part of your ski racing adventure. Your enthusiasm and desire to do your best has kept me youthful and invigorated each and every day!

There is a special group of people that truly make this club sing, their unwavering dedication, enthusiasm, and passion towards making this the best ski club in North America is absolutely remarkable. No job is ever too big to complete, and they do it without hesitation or pushback. The calibre of these individuals is extremely rare, and we are lucky to have them as part of our team. You know who you are and without you this club does not function, thank you!

Finally, to Anne, Maddie and Harry, thank you for being with me on this adventure. The past ten years have been remarkably gratifying and fulfilling.

Bye for now, until we meet again on the mtn,

We did it! After 30 years from its inception, the O2E Brands Whistler Cup successfully ran April 13th to 16th, 2023. With 380 athletes competing from over 20 countries, the Whistler Cup was back in its full running as North America’s only international Children’s event and magic was in the air.

It didn’t take long for all of us to be reminded of just how special this event is. When the parade started, the sun was shining, the kids were running around meeting athletes from other nations and the flags were raised high with excitement. Not only were we able to offer a world class ski race with strong international competition, but the off the hill events, doubles and makes this one of the most cherished experiences in a young ski racer’s career.

Congratulations to all the podium winners from Canada, Japan, Switzerland, Norway, USA, Chile and Czech Republic. For the overall nation winners, we congratulate Canada for successfully defending the Whistler Cup and team USA for winning the U14 Festival Cup. And as well a big congratulations to all the participants who competed with their full effort and spirit, it’s what racing is about. Please see the results below:

BC Alpine Calendar -Whistler Cup Results

A special thank you to all our major sponsors, partners, members and volunteers! You brought your energy and enthusiasm and are what makes this unique event possible. From all of us on the organizing committee, a heartfelt thank you and we will see you next year.
