COVID-19 Update

Posted by Chloe Sigouin on Mar 12 2020 at 12:06PM PDT

Dear all

As you are all aware the World Health organization has now declared COVID-19 as Pandemic.

We are closely following the updates from the World Health Organisation, the Public Health Agency Canada (PHAC) and the BC Government. PHAC have assessed that the public health risk associated with COVID-19 as low for the general population in Canada but this could change rapidly.

We are also in conversation with BC Alpine, Alpine Canada and race organising committees regarding upcoming events and strategies and will keep you informed of any decisions. As I am sure that many of you are aware that Alpine & Para-Alpine World Cups, European Cup finals and World Junior Championships have all been impacted by cancelations leading to many questions regarding all other events. There are assessments on ongoing developments and decisions will be communicated as soon as possible.

In the meantime, for training at home and the current trips / events that are happening we encourage the utmost of diligence in hygiene as per the PHAC guidelines. The basics being:

Proper hygiene can help reduce the risk of infection or spreading infection to others:

  • wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the washroom and when preparing food
  • use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available
  • when coughing or sneezing: cough or sneeze into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand
  • dispose of any tissues you have used as soon as possible in a lined waste basket and wash your hands afterwards
  • avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands
  • clean the following high-touch surfaces frequently with regular household cleaners or diluted bleach (1 part bleach to 9 parts water):

If you do have any cold or flu like symptoms at all, or believe that you or any of the family may have been exposed to an infected person, please err on the side of caution and do not attend any training sessions. It is absolutely critical that you do not attend any trips or events and follow the PHAC advice on self-isolation.

Additionally, we will be adding additional hand sanitizing facilities at the club cabin, and the coaches will ensure that all fitness equipment is wiped down after use. Please help to ensure that this is maintained at all times.

The Whistler Mountain Ski Club coaching staff and admin have been briefed on the Club’s hand-washing exposure and waste disposal strategies.

Best regards,

Mark Tilston
